East Point Energy Announces Inaugural Energy Storage Projects in Texas

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.– East Point Energy, an Equinor Company, has announced the start of construction of Sunset Ridge Energy Center (Sunset Ridge) in Frio County, Texas, as well as the final investment decision of the Citrus Flatts Energy Center (Citrus Flatts) in Cameron County, Texas.

East Point Energy, a development firm focused on the origination, construction, and operation of energy storage projects, sold the project to Dominion Energy Virginia in September 2021, prior to their acquisition by Equinor. Located in Chesterfield County, Dry Bridge is an essential component of Dominion Energy’s commitment to clean energy. Under the Virginia Clean Economy Act, 100% of Dominion’s electricity sales will come from clean energy sources by 2045.

East Point Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of Equinor, recently joined the second cohort of the Green Business Alliance, a project of the Community Climate Collaborative (C3). C3 is an organization based out of Charlottesville, VA that helps people and businesses take action and lead on climate through the organization’s programs, policy research, and advocacy. East Point joins nine other local Charlottesville organizations and companies in this cohort, which represents a collective commitment to reduce emissions and advance our economy for a clean energy future.

East Point Energy has announced the launch of its Project Acquisition Program. The company has a strategy to acquire standalone energy storage, solar, and solar plus storage projects in the United States. Initially, the company will favor standalone storage projects that can achieve commercial operation in 2024 and 2025 in ERCOT, PJM, NYISO, and ISONE, but will review and consider projects in all power markets.

East Point Energy announced the sale of the Shands Energy Storage project to Dominion Energy Virginia, one of the nation’s largest utilities. At 15.7 megawatts(MW)/62.8 megawatt-hours (MWh), Shands will be one of the largest standalone storage projects in Virginia when it becomes operational in 2025. Located in Sussex County, Shands will enhance local grid reliability and serve as an essential component of Dominion Energy’s 100% clean energy future.

East Point Energy announced the sale of the Yadkins Energy Storage project to Aypa Power, a Blackstone portfolio company and developer, as well as owner and operator of energy storage and hybrid generation assets. The project will increase grid resilience and is well-sited to support the Hampton Roads load growth and planned offshore wind interconnecting nearby.

Andrew Foukal (CEO) represented East Point Energy in two separate conferences this week, speaking about energy storage in East Point’s home state of Virginia and about the benefits of battery energy storage vs. natural gas peakers. Foukal participated in the Virginia Clean Energy Summit on October 20th, speaking on the panel “Energy Storage in Virginia.” Foukal was joined on this panel by Ricky Elder of Dominion Energy, Michael Herbert of Delorean Power, and Nitzan Goldberger of Borrego Solar Systems. Ricky Elder (Dominion Energy) and Foukal teamed up again on October 21st, presenting as part of Solar Power Events North America Smart Energy Week 2020. Their presentation was titled “Front-of-the-meter Battery Storage vs Natural Gas Peakers: How will Utilities Manage Peak Load Going Forward?”

Groundbreaking Battery Storage Project Launched

August 18, 2020

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative and East Point Energy, a leading energy storage project developer, have announced commencement of the first grid-scale energy storage project by a Virginia electric cooperative. The project has a peak capacity of 2 megawatts and a duration of 8 megawatt hours, or enough to power about 1,000 homes for 8 hours. Construction is expected to begin this fall, with full operation starting in early 2021.
